Texas A&M star sophomore pitcher is out for the rest of the season

· Yahoo Sports

Texas A&M is headed to the College Station Regional Final after defeating Texas State 17-2 on Saturday night, thanks to 20 hits from the Aggie lineup, while junior RHP Weston Moss posted a career-high 10 strikeouts after allowing two early home runs that gave the Bobcats an early 2-0 lead.

However, Moss's start spurred more speculation about star sophomore LHP Aiden Sims, who has not taken the mound in four games after dealing with reported "tightness," prompting second-year coach Michael Earley to provide several cryptic updates heading into the postseason.

Texas A&M's pitching rotation has been thin all season, while Sims served as the lone bright spot for most of the year after finishing the regular season with an 8-1 record, team-high 3.84 ERA, and 17 strikeouts during his first starting season. After the Aggies throttled Texas State, Earley provided the grim news that Aiden Sims will miss the rest of the postseason, just minutes after Weston Moss excited the game to a standing ovation.

While specifics regarding his injury weren't provided, Earley also stated that this was not the plan all along, as Sims attempted a comeback, but his future is too important, and the plan is to prevent any further damage.

"It's just not there, and for the best interest of the kid, he's not going to pitch."

Outside of Weston Moss and Shane Sdao, who struggled on Friday, Gavin Lyons and Ethan Darden will now serve as the only reliable starting options, while closer Clayton Freshcorn will be heavily relied on to finish games. Still, this puts even more pressure on Texas A&M's offense to produce big innings and provide each pitcher a cushion.

Texas A&M will face either Texas State or USC in the College Station Regional Final on Sunday night.
