Barcelona and Atletico Madrid emerge as prime contenders to sign Portuguese international – Romano

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been at loggerheads with each other throughout this summer over Julian Alvarez, with the latter resorting to defaming Barça.

But Alvarez will not be the only bone of contention for these two giants this summer, as they are now set to battle it out for the pursuit of Bernardo Silva.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered a fresh update on the future of Bernardo Silva, confirming that the Portuguese international is 99% expected to play in La Liga next season.

Silva has run down his contract at Manchester City and will be available as a free agent this summer.

Barcelona have been linked with a move for Silva, but Romano confirms Atletico Madrid is the other option for the former AS Monaco playmaker.

Silva ideally wants to complete his move before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, meaning the next couple of weeks could be consequential.

Barcelona are in pole position to sign Silva as a free agent. However, the club are facing a couple of roadblocks.

For one, they are awaiting the approval of Hansi Flick, who is yet to green-light the move due to a stacked midfield unit, with most of the Barcelona midfielders or creative stars being able to operate in Silva’s position.

Silva does have an upper hand due to his ability to operate as a winger and a false nine. But that is where the second problem comes.

If Barcleona are to accommodate Silva, they have to finalise the departures of at least a few players in the area. Until then, Silva’s future remains in limbo, with Atletico pushing.
