Clemson lands elite ball-tracking WR Julian Cromartie from Texas

· Yahoo Sports

Julian Cromartie announced his commitment to the Tigers football program after being projected to Clemson, giving wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham another body in the 2027 room. He is listed by 247Sports at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, with the site rating him as a three-star prospect. His profile shows Clemson beating out a group that included Kansas, Arizona State, Arkansas, and Baylor.

The interesting part with Cromartie is the frame and vertical ability. A lot of his film shows him being used downfield, where College Park let him get vertical and work into open space. He tracks the ball well when it is in the air, and one of the better flashes is his ability to adjust on back-shoulder throws instead of just relying on running past defenders.

My standout trait would have to be his toughness after the catch. Cromartie impressively shows the ability to shed contact and keep moving when defenders try to drag him down more than once throughout his film. Combine that with his speed, and he could be a future deadly threat as a possible jet-sweep option in this new-shape offense under Chad Morris.

There is still much development needed. Cromartie does not look like the sharpest route runner yet, and some of his breaks look more rounded than sudden. Instead of snapping off cuts toward the middle or outside, he can drift through them a little, which is something that he will have to tighten up at the next level. The weight profile also isn't where you want to see it yet, although that is more normal for a high school recruit transitioning into college ball. Tee Higgins went through the same thing.

Still, Clemson is betting on tools here. At 6-foot-2, with vertical ability, ball tracking, and some catch-after-contact flashes, Cromartie gives the Tigers a wide receiver prospect with room to grow. He may not be the flashiest name like a TJ Moore or a Bryant Wesco, but there is enough on film to understand why Clemson wants to take a stab at him.
