CENTERVILLE — The last time the Centerville baseball team started the season with three straight wins, the Big Reds played for a state championship.
Will Centerville's make that same journey to Merchants Park in Carroll for the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament this summer? Only time will tell.

The Big Reds improved to 3-0 for the first time finishing second in the state in 2021 on Monday, sweeping their first South Central Conference doubleheader of the season. Abram Decena picked up the win on the mound after a rough opening inning, collecting two hits at the plate while scoring twice as the Big Reds erased a 3-0 deficit in the opening game against Albia to secure an 11-7 win in the first conference contest before scoring nine runs in the opening inning of a 13-3 victory in game two against the Blue Demons.
"It's huge for us to build up some early momentum this season," Decena said. "We've played good baseball early in the season. We got better as the night progressed. We've got some good stuff coming. I know we've got some good bats in our line-up, so even if I didn't have my best stuff on the mound in the first inning, I have confidence that we're going to fight back. We've put in a lot of hard work and have a lot of discipline that I think can carry us pretty far this season."
Centerville (3-0, 2-0 SCC) hosts Davis County on Friday. Albia (1-3, 0-2 SCC) will look to bounce back at home on Friday with a conference doubleheader against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
