What’s next for Fried, who is on the 15-day injured list with a bone bruise?

Before the Yankees-Royals game on Monday, manager Aaron Boone provided updates on his sidelined players, including designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton and pitcher Clarke Schmidt.

Here is the latest on the five Yankees who are on the IL:

MAX FRIED, LHP

Injury: Left elbow bone bruise.

Status: 15-day IL since May 16 (retroactive to May 14).

Missed games: 10.

Expected return: June or July.

2026 stats: 4-3 record, 3.21 ERA, 10 starts, 61.2 IP, 43 hits, 22 runs, 22 ER, 1 HR, 19 BB, 50 K.

The latest: Fried’s shutdown-from-throwing period ended Monday, but he just played catch. He hasn’t yet been cleared to long toss or return to the mound.

Boone on May 28: “He played catch (Monday, but) don’t read too far into that. He’s not ramping up now. He’s able to play catch, though. We want to keep his arm going. He’s had a pretty good week overall as far as symptoms and feeling pretty good and responding to everything pretty well, but he’s not at a point to where we can start ramping him up.”

GIANCARLO STANTON, DH

Injury: Right calf strain.

Status: 10-day IL since May 13.

Missed games: 28.

Expected return: June.

2026 stats: .256 average, 23-for-90, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 1 SB, 6 BB, 29 K, .724 OPS, 24 games.

The latest: Stanton may be cleared to begin running Tuesday when he’s reexamined. On April 24, he injured his calf jogging to second base after Jazz Chisholm worked a walk during a game in Houston. A second MRI two weeks ago showed healing, but not enough to progress his rehabilitation.

Boone on May 25: “Hopefully with the next round of imaging we’re in a position to start ramping up the run, but we don’t know that yet.”

JASSON DOMINGUEZ, LF

Injury: Left shoulder AC joint strain on crash into Yankee Stadium left-field wall on May 7.

Status: 10-day IL since May 8.

Missed games: 16.

Expected return: Early June.

2026 stats: .200 average, 6-for-30, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, 1 BB, 4 K, .617 OPS, 9 games.

The latest: Dominguez is scheduled to start hitting in a cage this week and might only be a few days away from being cleared to begin a rehab assignment. After Stanton returns, the Yankees may have to decide between keeping shortstop Anthony Volpe or Dominguez on their four-man bench.

Boone on May 22: “I think the hope is when we go on the trip (next week), he’ll start to get ramped up, baseball activity, and then by the time we’re at the backend of the trip (next weekend) or home (the following week), he’s ready to play games. That’s the hope and that’s kind of how he’s trending.”

CLARKE SCHMIDT, RHP

Injury: Tommy John surgery on July 11, 2025.

Status: 60-day IL since Feb. 12.

Missed games: 54.

Expected return: September.

The latest: Rehabbing in Tampa, Schmidt started throwing off a mound on April 10, but hasn’t yet been cleared to face hitters.

Boone on May 25: “Clarke is coming back next homestand up to New York, so he’ll transfer up there with us. He’s doing well.”

ANGEL CHIVILLI, RHP

Injury: Right shoulder discomfort.

Status: 15-day IL since April 26 (retroactive to April 23).

Missed games: 28.

Expected return: To be determined.

2026 stats: 0-0 record, 3.86 ERA, 2 games, 2.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 3 K.

The latest: Chivilli is throwing, but not close to pitching in a game. He first noticed shoulder discomfort while putting on a shirt the day after his relief outing in Boston on April 23. Two days later, he was shut down from throwing for three weeks.

Boone on May 25: “He’s in his throwing program, but not there yet.”
