After decades in the shadows of sport, doping will be the main attraction Sunday at the inaugural Enhanced Games.

The competition, which has drawn a furious response from the International Olympic Committee, sports governing bodies and anti-doping agencies, not only encourages but facilitates the use of performance-enhancing substances. Most of the runners, swimmers and weightlifters participating in the one-day event have been on a personalized regimen of enhancements long banned in traditional arenas, including anabolic steroids, human growth hormones, testosterone and more, according to a recent BBC report

Enhanced Games organizers say their system "ensures all enhancements are safe, legal, and scientifically guided. Unlike traditional sporting bodies, Enhanced does not ban performance-enhancing substances - it brings them out of the shadows, with full transparency, safety, and medical oversight."

The highest-profile athlete set to participate is Fred Kerley, who took bronze and silver, respectively, in the 100 meters at the Paris and Tokyo Olympics, and won the event at the 2022 World Championships. But the American sprinter is just one of numerous Olympians from multiple countries slated to compete.

The star attraction, though, is better known for his work in other arenas. Thor Bjornsson, better known as The Mountain from "Game of Thrones", will return to his strongman roots in a deadlift competition against the current World's Strongest Man, Mitchell Hooper.

While organizers have touted their desire to "redefine human limits," there's plenty of concrete incentive for the participants. The winners of each event are set to earn $250,000, and a bonus of $1 million is on the line for anyone who breaks a world record in the track 100 meters or swimming 50-meter freestyle.
