The 31-year-old has enjoyed arguably his best season yet at Old Trafford, providing a record-equalling 20 assists and scoring eight goals as he captained United to a third-placed finish.
Fernandes beat off competition from Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Gabriel and David Raya and Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo.
Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Thiago were also nominated for the award.
Fernandes has several more goals in the coming days, weeks and months. He can break the assist record tomorrow at Brighton and win the PFA Player of the Year award and, most importantly, help Portugal win a first-ever World Cup.
