Paige Bueckers responds after coach called out ‘selfishness’
· Yahoo Sports
After back-to-back losses last week, Dallas Wings head coach coach Jose Fernandez got pretty blunt about what he was seeing from his team as he called out “selfishness” in the locker room. Now, the Wings have righted the ship a bit, and superstar Paige Bueckers appears to have addressed those comments.
After beating Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever to open the season, the Wings suffered back-to-back losses last week, which lead Fernandez to call out the “selfishness” he saw in the team’s locker room.

“I mean, it’s real talk and it’s accountability. That’s what I told them,” Fernandez said last week. “There’s selfishness in this locker room. There is. You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you play. And don’t get upset if you think you should’ve played more or you didn’t play enough or you didn’t get the shots you think you should’ve gotten. Really good teams, they don’t give a s— about that. You know what they give a s— about, they give a s— about winning, ‘cause that’s what matters.”
While those were obviously some strong words from the head coach, it seems that the team took it to heart. In their very next showing, the Wings played perhaps their most complete game of the season as the team dominated the Washington Mystics by a score of 92-69.
Following the game, Bueckers appeared to respond to this callout from her coach as she made it clear that the message was received.
“We played selfless tonight,” Bueckers said in clear reference to Fernandez’s comments last week. “Really good two days of practice leading up to this game where we were talking, communicating. We had a rough film session where we held each other accountable and talked about what we needed to improve on.”
The Wings kept up that strong play on Wednesday night with a 99-89 win over the Chicago Sky. With back-to-back wins, Dallas is back on track following the tough love from Fernandez, and both Bueckers and rookie Azzi Fudd are performing well, with Fudd posting her two best scoring performances of the season in her past two games.
