Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story opted to go on the injured list and stopped playing through his injury on Saturday before the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Story had been battling the injury since spring training, interim manager Chad Tracy revealed. According to Story, it began as a minor injury and just kind of snowballed into a bigger issue.

“It started as a groin and bounced to the hammy and the abdomen,” Story said, via The Athletic. “You feel it in all kind of different places. And that’s the frustrating part, too. So, I think right off the bat, I didn’t take my mind to sports hernia. It’s more about just an isolated thing, and you try to treat it, but the more it kind of went on and stayed around, and from the (players) I talked to, they were telling me that’s what it was, without me really accepting it.”

Story said it was something he could continue to play through. However, it got worse and he realized he had to go on the injured list as he wasn’t playing like himself.

“I just couldn’t kick it after that,” Story said. “It’s been a battle for the first month, month and a half. Tried to grind through it and just got to the point where I might need to take a timeout and evaluate some things a little further. Obviously, I haven’t been able to really move like myself out there. It kind of built up on me.”

Before going on the injured list, Story was hitting .206 with three home runs and 19 RBIs as he had struggled at the plate.

As for Boston, the Red Sox picked up a 3-2 win over the Braves on Saturday and will look for the series win on Sunday.
