Auburn softball stuns Missouri in SEC Softball Tournament opener

· Yahoo Sports

With just four wins in SEC play, the Auburn Tigers entered this week's SEC Tournament needing to make quite a few statements to secure a place in the NCAA Regionals. Tuesday, the Tigers took a giant step in accomplishing that goal.

Down 2-0 heading into the 6th inning, No. 14-seeded Auburn rattled off six unanswered runs in the final two frames to stun the No. 11-seeded Missouri Tigers in round one of the SEC Tournament, 6-2, on Tuesday at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky.

Auburn's comeback effort began with a pair of mishaps by Missouri. With one out in the 6th inning, Alyssa Hastings and Ma'Nia Womack scored on a throwing error by Missouri catcher Stefania Abruscato and a wild pitch from pitcher Abby Carr, respectively. The miscues set freshman Haven Roebuck with an opportunity to steal the lead from the Tigers, which she did by blasting a two-run home run to left field to push her team ahead, 4-2. Kyla Stroud followed suit with a solo home run in the 7th, with Womack adding insurance with a two-out RBI single in the inning to score Kylie Shaw.

Charley Butler slammed the door on Missouri by walking just one batter and allowing a hit over the final three innings to pick up the win. Butler earned the victory in the circle in relief of Ella Harrison, who was tagged for two earned runs and two walks in four innings of work, where she allowed only four hits and struck out five Missouri Tigers.

The No. 14-seeded Auburn Tigers advance to face the No. 6-seeded Texas A&M on Wednesday at 10 A.M. CT on SEC Network.
