On a day that celebrates 3-year-old male horses, a female trainer stole the show at Churchill Downs.

Cherie Deveaux became the first woman to train the winner of the Kentucky Derby as Golden Tempo launched a huge rally through the stretch to win the Run for the Roses.

Golden Tempo closed from dead last to win the first leg of the Triple Crown, a stunning finish. The horse went off at 23-1 and paid $48.24 for a $2 bet.

Renegade, one of the favorites who went off at 5-1, launched his patented late run to moved toward the lead in the deep stretch but was unable to hold off the charge of Golden Tempo. Ocelli, a 70-1 shot, finished third.

Jockey Jose Ortiz won the race. His brother, Irad, finished second on Renegade.

This was the 10th Derby ride for Irad Ortiz, and he has yet to win the Run for the Roses.

The second leg of the Triple Crown is the Preakness, which will be run at Laurel Park on May 16. The final leg, the Belmont, will be conducted three weeks later at Saratoga Race Course.
