The Coast Guard received a report that security cameras captured the unidentified crew member falling off the ship, plunging into the Atlantic Ocean about 19 kilometres off the coast of Wallfleet, Mass.

Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed the incident in a statement.

Another helicopter took off later Sunday morning, but the search was suspended in the early afternoon “pending new information,” per CBS News .

The ship arrived at Black Falcon Terminal in Boston just before noon that day.

What passengers were told

In an interview with CBS News Boston , a passenger noted that a ship-wide overboard announcement was issued with lifeboats launching soon after.

Passengers also got a letter stating that embarkation would take place later than expected on Sunday due to the arrival delays.

“Overnight and into the early morning hours, the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts following a man overboard situation, working closely with maritime authorities,” the letter said, per CBS News Boston . “These efforts required the vessel’s full attention before the voyage could safely resume toward Boston. Situations such as these are never easy, and the safety and well-being of those at sea remain at the heart of every decision we make.”

It’s not known what caused the crew member to fall overboard.
