NFL Draft: Trades Values in Round 1

After an interesting start to the NFL Draft that saw Carnell Tate as the first Ohio State player off the board and Arvell Reese go to the Giants, the Kansas City Chiefs traded up with the Cleveland Browns for the 6th selection in the draft, and the trade was textbook value. The Chiefs gave up 1602.2 points of value (#9, #74, and #148) in exchange for the 1600-point pick #6. Perhaps surprising to some, the trade was to allow the selection of Mansoor Delane. It was not a secret that the Browns wanted to move down, but they still collected full value from Brett Veach.

Next Dallas traded up one spot with Miami, giving up both #177 and #180 alongside #12, delivering 1242 points in exchange for the 1250-point 11th pick. This was within 1% value and it was a relatively cheap way to make sure nobody jumped them in line on their way to getting Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
No deals showed up, in other words, despite belief that the softer class might motivate a few teams to take discounts, which happened at some points last year. So far in the first half of the first day, Jimmy Johnson’s chart still guides the market.
