On Monday, the beleaguered national mail carrier recorded the billion-dollar loss before tax for 2025, up from the previous year’s $841 million.

Canada Post’s CEO Doug Ettinger announced that the postal service will cut 30,000 jobs in the next 10 years through attrition in its annual report to Parliament.

The report said the Crown corporation will be able to reduce its workforce through retirements and voluntary departures of approximately 16,000 employees by 2030, and a further estimated 14,000 employees from 2031 to 2035, per Blacklock’s.

“Change is never easy, especially at Canada Post,” Ettinger wrote, according to Blacklock’s. “It’s largely the reason many of the restrictions we faced remained in place long after their due date. It also means while Canadians respect the need to secure the postal service, some changes will raise concerns.”

Further service cuts eyed

Following last week’s announcement of the first addresses to lose door-to-door delivery, the Canada Post report said that it is reviewing the further phasing out of doorstep delivery of some rural mailboxes, with deliveries on country routes also under review, according to Blacklock’s.

Door-to-door delivery costs $284 per address a year, while community mailboxes cost $162 per address.

Approximately 136,000 addresses will lose door-to-door deliver this year in its first phase of delivery cuts.

Over the next five years, it’s expected that a total of four million addresses will be serviced by community mailboxes.

The report also said Canada Post will cut service outlets after the federal government recently lifted the 1994 moratorium on closing rural post offices.

The report also recommended replacing mail delivery schedules from every business day to second-day delivery.
