Coming off the worst start of his career earlier in the week, Garrett Crochet had something to prove during Sunday's outing against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.

For the most part, the Boston Red Sox ace pitched well. He allowed a two-out RBI double to Dillon Dingler in the top of the first but quickly settled down, matching Framber Valdez and keeping the score at 1-1 entering the fifth inning.

That's when things suddenly unraveled for Crochet. For the second time on Sunday, he got two quick outs but had trouble getting the third.

The Red Sox lefty surrendered a solo homer, a walk, a single, a three-run homer and another single before recording the third out -- his last of the afternoon. He allowed four runs in the frame, putting Boston in a 5-1 hole.

The Red Sox have struggled at the plate all weekend, and they were unable to recover, losing 6-2 and dropping to 8-13 with their second straight defeat.

On the plus side for Crochet, his eight strikeouts matched his season high and Sunday's outing was a step in the right direction. However, he allowed two homers for the second consecutive outing and lost for the third time in his last four starts, inflating his ERA to a season-worst 7.88.

Last year's AL Cy Young runner-up hasn't looked like himself to begin 2026, especially over his last two starts. In just 6 2/3 innings during those outings, he's allowed a whopping 16 hits, 15 earned runs, four home runs and five walks with eight strikeouts.

It's been a tough stretch for Crochet, but it's still early. He'll try to rebound in his next outing at home against the Houston Astros, who handed him his first loss of the season back on April 1.
