The RCMP’s Central Region said Tuesday that members of the Canada Border Services Agency uncovered the fake documents at the airport’s commercial operations in recent days.
The investigation began after a CBSA officer referred a 1,600-kg shipment arriving from Nigeria for examination. During the examination, police said officers located seven fraudulent documents concealed inside sandals, five from Gambia and two from South Africa.
“All seven fraudulent passports contained the same picture of a male with different names and inconsistent biographical details throughout,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Border agents arrested a woman and seized the forged documents and additional materials, police said.
The RCMP’s border integrity unit at the airport then took over the investigation and charged Nnenna Oketa with knowingly possessing a forged passport.
“This investigation underscores the critical role of inter-agency co-operation in safeguarding Canada’s borders,” said Insp. John McMath, the RCMP officer in charge of Toronto’s airport detachment.
“Working closely with our partners at the Canada Border Services Agency allows us to protect Canadians from the risks posed by fraudulent identification documents.”
