Brad Stevens embraces Celtics role, shuts down college coaching rumors

BOSTON — It's no secret that Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens is a hot commodity. He's built a college program from the ground up, developed talent for the Celtics, and even became NBA Executive of the Year in 2024.

The Celtics exec is in the running for that prestigious award once again this season, resulting in decisionmakers all over the basketball world trying to gauge his interest. There were even rumors that the University of North Carolina tried to poach him in order to manage the Tar Heels, yet the prestigious school ended up with former Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone.

That's likely because Stevens was never really on the market. Prior to the Celtics' primetime matchup with the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night, Stevens spoke to the media for 15 minutes and made it clear that he enjoys being a part of the C's and their winning culture.

"I like being here," Stevens stated. "They've been great to me, and I haven't been seeking anything else."

Since coming to Boston in 2013, Stevens has helped the Celtics maintain their status as one of the premier franchises in the NBA. And while all the victories and championships are nice, he simply enjoys the relationships he's forged in Beantown.

"I'm really happy with the people we're around and everything else, and that's been the best part about being here," he admitted. "As you get to this age and stage, I think that's the motivator for me. I don't really have any other motivation than being around people that I want to be around."

Stevens has seemingly pushed all the right buttons while serving as the Celtics de facto general manager. His unavailability will crush college programs hoping for a stellar hire, but it's sure to delight basketball fans across New England.

"I'm not motivated to do anything but what I'm doing is the bottom line," Stevens emphasized.
