The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers nearly a year ago.

Since then, pretty much none of the dominoes that followed for Boston have worked out the way they would've hoped.

Start with the initial return for Devers: Kyle Harrison and James Tibbs III.

The Red Sox traded Tibbs to the Dodgers at the trade deadline for half a season of Dustin May, who wasn't any good and has since joined the St. Louis Cardinals.

Boston traded Harrison (and more) to the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason for Caleb Durbin to play third base, and Durbin has been one of the worst hitters in baseball in the early going.

Meanwhile, Tibbs already has seven home runs in Triple-A this season, and Harrison is dealing for Milwaukee.

The only reason the Red Sox needed Durbin in the first place is because of Alex Bregman.

They signed Bregman last offseason, moving Devers off third base and ticking him off, leading to the trade. Then after the year, Bregman opted out of his deal and signed with the Chicago Cubs.

And the Bregman money went instead to Ranger Suarez, who has not been sharp in the very early going on the mound for Boston.

Obviously, it's impossible to rewrite the past. But in a scenario where the Red Sox never sign Bregman, everything could be different.

If Boston didn't sign Bregman last offseason, they might still have Devers, Harrison and Tibbs. Suarez may have signed elsewhere. The Brewers may have traded Durbin somewhere else. May could've been on a different team down the stretch last season.

There are obviously implications across the league, but certainly in Boston, none of this has worked out so far as they would've hoped.
