Pirates' Konnor Griffin Reflects on ‘Perfect’ MLB Debut
· Yahoo Sports
Konnor Griffin’s MLB debut finally came on Friday afternoon, and it was everything the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top prospect could have dreamt it could be. Not only did he get his first big-league hit and look solid on defense, but the Pirates also came away with a win over the Baltimore Orioles.
For how much attention and hype has surrounded Griffin since he was drafted back in 2024, it’s very easy to forget that he’s still just 19 years old.

Griffin’s game at PNC Park on Friday was easily the biggest crowd he’s ever played in front of, and he admitted that there were some nerves starting to settle in before the game got going.
“Yeah, I was [during the] National Anthem. We did intros, all that, [I] couldn't really feel my feet, so that was that was a funny moment,” admitted Griffin. “I haven't felt like that in a long time, so it really got me going.”
Plus, it wasn’t like Griffin was leading off for the Pirates. He was in the lineup, hitting setup, and had to wait over 40 minutes after the game started to get his first at-bat.

Griffin thought he was seeing fastballs in his first at-bat, but ended up facing all offspeed. He adjusted accordingly, though, and with two strikes in the count, Griffin ripped a ball deep to left-center field, scoring Ryan O’Hearn from first base.
Griffin’s first his was officially went down as an RBI double.

To answer the question on everyone’s mind, no, Griffin hasn’t gotten the ball back from his teammates yet. “I haven't seen the ball yet, so hopefully it shows up in the locker at some point,” he said.
Griffin will never forget his big-league debut, and if the 19-year-old lives up to the incredible high expectations analysts have for him, Pirates fans won’t forget it either.
Griffin continued, “It was awesome. Just everything I've dreamed of for a long time, and getting it under my belt, first big league game - Man, we got to win as well - It was all a perfect day.”
