Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne believes the “ship has sailed” on the SEC Championship Game — not just in the SEC, but across all of college football.
“It’s run its course,” Byrne said according to multiple reports.

The playoff once featured just four teams. Now, it includes 12. Many argue that the selection committee should ignore conference championship results altogether.

On the other side, some believe conference champions should receive automatic bids. This past season, Duke won the ACC but missed the playoff, while Miami (FL) earned a spot instead.
Miami also received a bid over defending runner-up Notre Dame, which has faced heavy criticism in recent years for remaining independent rather than joining a conference.

Eliminating conference championships would leave the committee to select the 12 — or potentially soon 16 — best teams in the country. Such a change would significantly alter the regular season and could reshape future scheduling.
