However, it is something of a lucky break for SASSA Older Person Grants over Easter 2026, too.
Because they are the only social welfare recipients to receive their stipend before the Easter long weekend – paying on Thursday 2 April 2025.
But the whole debacle could’ve been handled so much better …
SASSA OLDER PERSON GRANTS OVER EASTER 2026
As a result, the South African Social Security Agency came out last week calling for calm from SASSA grant recipients while ‘administrative issues’ were being rectified.
According to reports, along with grant increases, the National Treasury had to ratify the entire year’s SASSA payment dates.
As such, SASSA Older Person Grants over Easter 2026 will be R80 more than last year. Therefore, over 60s will be paid R2 400 (up from R2 320) next week. And over 75s R2 420 (up from R2 340). However, not all SASSA grant recipients were as lucky, with many having to wait five weeks for money, taking them beyond the Easter long weekend.
2026 SASSA GRANT INCREASES LOWER THAN HOPED
2026’s situation is as a result of decisions made one year prior by the National Treasury. Image: FileMoreover, to rub salt into the wound, SASSA Older Person Grants over Easter 2026 are far lower than anyone was hoping. Announced at the 2026 Budget Speech back in February, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tied the increase to a projected inflation rate of 3.4%. Sadly, this already appears to be overly ambitious, with the cost of living set to skyrocket due to the Middle East conflict.
At the same time, Wednesday 1 April 2026 sees Eskom electricity tariffs increase by 8.8%. In turn, this sets up a further municipal electricity tariff increase for Wednesday 1 July 2026. Quite how SASSA Older Persons are meant to afford all this on a miserly R80 increase is anyone’s guess.
LONG ROAD TO SASSA OLDER PESON GRANTS OVER EASTER 2026
However, as The South African has already reported, small increases for SASSA grants in 2026 were inevitable after last year’s Budget Speech debacle. The Minister Godongwana approved 4.8% (R110) increases on the basis he could increase VAT across the board.
However, who can forget that his initial budget was universally condemned in parliament. However, by the time that had happened in May, April 2025 increases had already been paid and agency never reversed the increase. The inevitable result is smaller increases this year.
