U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Lewiston Bridge border crossing were alerted March 21 to a Mercedes Benz SUV with Ontario plates by a narcotics detector dog.

CBP officers scanned the vehicle and detected anomalies in both the rear quarter panel and the trunk door, officials said in a release. A search allegedly discovered six vacuum sealed bags of a green leafy substance which tested positive for the properties of marijuana.

The marijuana weighed approximately six pounds and had an estimated street value of more than $16,000.

Kudos to K-9 team

“Our highly trained K-9 team played a critical role in the successful interdiction of narcotics concealed within a vehicle,” said Acting Port Director Sharon Swiatek in a statement.

“The detection abilities of our canine and diligence of our officers led to the discovery and seizure of illegal substances, and the transfer of two suspects to local authorities for criminal prosecution.”

Mercedes driver Andrea Seivewright, 43, and Daniel Hughes, 35, were turned over to the Lewiston Police Department and charged with felony second-degree possession of marijuana.

CBP noted its officers and agents seized an average of about 1,600 pounds daily of dangerous drugs between the air, sea, and land ports of entry to the United States in 2025.
