The New England Patriots are eagerly awaiting to see if the Philadelphia Eagles are willing to trade wide receiver A.J. Brown.

There is plenty of speculation that the Eagles want to move on from Brown, but they won't make a move until after June 1. If they trade him before that date, they would face a $43 million dead cap hit for this season. Yet, if they wait until after June 1 for a trade, the cap hit would decrease to $16 million.

If the Eagles decide not to trade Brown until after June 1, they won’t be able to secure any draft picks for him this year. However, there’s a possibility that Philadelphia and New England could execute a trade similar to those seen in the NBA. This would involve the Eagles and Patriots agreeing to a handshake deal in which New England selects the players Philadelphia wants in the draft and then trades them to the Eagles after June 1. But Sports Illustrated's NFL insider, Albert Breer, believes that pulling this off would be quite challenging.

"Let’s just say, for example, that you are the rookie the Patriots are essentially drafting forthe Eagles," Breer wrote on Wednesday. "Now, to go along with this, you’re losing rookie onboarding that happens after the draft, your rookie minicamp, then two to three weeks of OTAs. That would then affect your shot to perform over the two weeks left in the offseason program in June, which is where you set yourself up to compete for playing time in the summer, and ultimately to play in the fall."

NBA teams frequently engage in strategic trades, as no deal can become official until the new league year kicks off in July. With the NBA draft in June, teams can execute trades before or during the draft to acquire players who will then join their trading partner's roster.

On the other hand, the NFL's approach to trade strategy differs from the NBA's, which likely means New England will face challenges in making a deal with the Eagles. If they’re aiming to secure Brown, they're probably going to have to give up some picks from 2027 and 2028 to get the deal done.
