While many things changed at the club following Ruben Amorim’s sacking in January and the subsequent appointment of Michael Carrick as interim coach, the Brazilian’s automatic starting role was never contested, despite his contract situation.
Man United could be open to extending Casemiro’s contract
In January, Casemiro announced his departure at the end of the season. It has been revealed that the Man Utd management opted against renewing his expiring contract for financial reasons.
Since taking over the club’s day-to-day operations, United’s minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has been vigorously working on reducing the costs, and this naturally includes the wage bill. And with the Brazilian midfielder considered the club’s highest earner, he has always had a large target on his back.
Nevertheless, there have been growing calls from Man Utd supporters, players, and pundits to keep the veteran for at least another year. This includes Wayne Rooney, who described Casemiro as an ‘absolutely fantastic’ player.
According to RTI Esporte, the Premier League giants are now internally discussing the possibility of pulling off a major U-turn and offering the former Real Madrid star a new contract.
As the source explains, Casemiro has no desire to return to Brazil at this stage of his career, as he feels he can still contribute at the highest level.
Why Man Utd should consider keeping Casemiro
The 34-year-old had always displayed a great passion and attachment to the MUFC cause, so he would certainly consider an extension offer should one come his way.
However, he would surely have to accept a sizable wage cut, as INEOS would be keen to reduce his £350,000-per-week salary.
But from a sporting perspective, keeping Casemiro would be a major boost for the next Man Utd permanent manager, whether it’s Carrick or anyone else.
With the club set to undergo a major midfield overhaul, keeping the Brazilian would give the club a tried-and-tested fallback option if the new signings fail to swiftly adapt.
Moreover, Casemiro’s stay would encourage United to part ways with the underwhelming Manuel Ugarte without having to worry about depleting the department.
