Texas A&M HC Bucky McMillan achieves massive accomplishment in Year 1

· Yahoo Sports

Texas A&M finished the 2025-2026 regular season 21-10 and 11-7 in SEC play, as first-year head coach Bucky McMillan and his veteran team, completely made up of offseason transfer portal additions, are likely headed to the NCAA Tournament after defeating LSU in 3 OT 94-91 on Saturday night.

Winning 20-plus games in any coach's first season after inheriting zero previous starters, and just one player currently on a roster, deserves national recognition, and while the argument between McMillan and Florida head coach Todd Golden winning SEC Coach of the Year will continue until the announcement is made, McMillan has more than proven his case, while Golden's Gators finished atop the SEC with a 16-2 record, and a likely 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Earning its sixth Quad 1 win, Texas A&M will likely earn a 9 or 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament, depending on the team's performance this week during the SEC Tournament, and given the potential of facing a 1-seed as an 8 or 9-seed in the second round, the 10-seed looks like the more favorable route.

Looking closer at the preseason projections for McMillan's first season at the helm, Texas A&M was projected to finish 13th in the SEC, and entered the year with just 34% odds to make the big dance. Tied for 4th in the conference with a 99% chance to make the tournament (BarTorvik), this is the highest conference standing with 11 victories for any Power 4 head coach in his first season since the 1995-1996 season.

This is just the start of what's to come in College Station under McMillan, who will look to reload his roster and retain key pieces going into the 2027-2028 season, while the focus is clearly on making a run in March Madness this month.
