Patience at pivotal position is key as Cowboys fill in free agency
· Yahoo Sports
When it comes to free agency most years, the Dallas Cowboys can be patient to a fault. Hunting for deals rather than specific talent, the Cowboys’ “que sera, sera” attitude towards free agents has led to some rather forgettable signings over the years.
Demands to do better have trumpeted from the fanbase for roughly a decade and it seems here in the Year of our Lord 2026, Jerry Jones might finally be listening. Statements from Jones about borrowing from the future and busting the budget indicate the Cowboys will take a more active approach this offseason. The actions made by the franchise appear to back that up as well.

But while hunting higher quality free agents is long overdue, some free agent positions are better left to the strategy of old.
Free agent position pools that run deep but lack high-end options would be better filled opportunistically than discriminately because deals can be had for teams willing to play the game patiently.
Positions like safety certainly qualify as one of these positions the Cowboys should handle in this manner. The free agent safety class lacks high end starters but rolls deep. The Cowboys just so happen to need help at all layers of the safety depth chart. They need a starter to pair with Malik Hooker, and they need rotational players to fill in and challenge Markquese Bell and Alijah Clark for snaps.

Based on statements from Christian Parker the Cowboys are placing a priority on intelligence this offseason. Plenty of experienced players are slated to hit the market and as long as Dallas doesn’t get too picky on their particular flavor of ice cream they want, deals could be had at this position.
Spots like linebacker and edge rusher aren’t afforded that luxury. The Cowboys need starting quality players at those positions, and the talent pool isn’t nearly as deep. According to reports, the Cowboys have already added to defensive end by trading for Rashad Gary. Word is they aren’t done at the position and still have irons in the fire. It wouldn’t be surprising to see linebacker follow suit with a veteran signing happening soon. But safety, has the wiggle room to wait.
Obviously, if a good deal presents itself early the Cowboys shouldn’t hesitate in making the move. But the depth at the safety spot this FA cycle allows the Cowboys to play this opportunistically, which could net them more than one bargains when all is said and done.
