Saints have a surprising tie to top free agent guard David Edwards

This could be interesting. After his colleague Ian Rapoport broke the news of a four-year, $52 million contract extension for Buffalo Bills center Connor McGovern, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo shared an interesting nugget on McGovern's teammate, left guard David Edwards. One of the top offensive linemen expected to test the free agent market and a popular target for the New Orleans Saints, Garafolo wrote that Edwards "seems headed to the market where big money in this ballpark awaits him." Garafolo added that Edwards' old teammate Will Clapp recently began working with the Saints as an assistant coach, "so there's a connection there."

Clapp spent the 2024 season as a backup for McGovern and Edwards in Buffalo, bouncing between the practice squad and active roster as needed. After losing the 2025 season to a foot injury, he retired and joined Kellen Moore's coaching staff; Clapp recently reflected on his journey to this point with Matt Moscona for After Further Review. Having a familiar face in the room would be appealing. But money talks louder than anyone. If the Saints are gearing up for a run at Edwards (and Garafolo wouldn't have mentioned that connection for no reason), they'll have to pay up.

It just might be worth it. Edwards, 29, has started the last two seasons and played at a very high level for the Bills. He's projected as much as $20 million per year in free agency, but interior offensive linemen are often worth the investment. There's thousands of snaps on game tape to evaluate here. The New Orleans offensive line was a mess last year, especially on the interior, and without a clear starter at left guard for 2026 they could bring Edwards in and check that item off their to-do list. Maybe Clapp can help deliver the recruiting pitch.
