Iran: As tensions escalate between Iran and Israel following recent airstrikes, Indian students stranded in affected cities have begun posting emotional video appeals on social media, urging the Government of India to speed up evacuation efforts.

Many of these students say they are living in fear and uncertainty as explosions and air raid alerts disrupt daily life.

Students request the Indian government

In one widely circulated video, an Indian student currently in Tehran described the ground situation as “really worse and uncertain.”

“Hi everyone, I’m an Indian student and currently I’m in Tehran. The situation here feels really worse and more uncertain. We really don’t know what’s going to happen next,” the student said, speaking over what appeared to be distant sounds of unrest.

“We’re grateful that the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs are in discussion for our safety. But in times like these, speed matters a lot. Airstrikes are happening and it’s getting really worse for us. We request quicker and clearer evacuation as soon as possible. Please do not wait for the situation to get worse. Just help us. Just get us out of here.”

Another student, Mehek Hussain from Urmia University of Medical Sciences, said panic has gripped Indian students in her city.

“As you are aware about the situation ongoing in Iran right now, Israel attacked in the morning and we got to know about it. Many parts of Iran, including Tehran and my city Urmeya, have been struck,” she said in her video message.

Hussain added that while the Indian embassy had earlier advised students to leave, many were unable to do so because their university did not permit them to exit in the middle of the academic term.

“We were advised to leave as soon as possible, but it was not in our hands because our university didn’t allow us to leave. We couldn’t play with our careers. Some students have already returned to India, but many of us are still here. We request the Indian government and the embassy to please take major steps and evacuate all Indian students and citizens staying here. We don’t know if the war will continue or stop. We are in fear.”

Exams adding to anxiety

The anxiety has been heightened by upcoming examinations. Dr Momin Khan, President of the AIMSA association, said students are torn between safety and academics.

“Students are anxious and want to return to India, but an upcoming examination scheduled on March 5 is preventing them from leaving. We have requested Iran’s Ministry of Health to postpone the examinations so that students can travel back safely,” he said.

According to AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi around 50,000 Indian citizens are currently in Iran and nearly 10,000 in Israel. Concerns have also been raised about the larger Indian diaspora across West Asia, particularly in GCC nations.

While the Government of India has issued advisories and said it is closely monitoring the situation, students on the ground say uncertainty remains their biggest challenge.
