Man shot dead in exchange of gunfire with Peel cops

One man was shot dead by a police officer in an exchange of gunfire early Saturday morning in Mississauga that nearly saw the cop take a bullet to his head.
Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrew told the Toronto Sun that the officer “got lucky” since “the bullet went through the top of the officer’s baseball cap.”

Police reported the shooting in a post on social media shortly after 2 a.m., adding that officers were OK and no other suspects were involved.
A 44-year-old man died as a result of the shooting, which occurred in the Dundas St. and Fifth Line area, near Erin Mills Pkwy., police said.
A neighbour said the original call was made to police for a domestic complaint and ended in a chase in which gunfire was allegedly exchanged between the suspect and the responding officers.

At the scene, evidence markers were seen on the ground in the residential area.
Meanwhile, the province’s Special Investigations Unit said it has taken over the investigation since the deadly incident involved a police officer.

According to the SIU, a woman contacted police at approximately 12:30 a.m. to report a domestic-related incident, explaining her husband had left their home on foot with a firearm.
The police watchdog said officers were dispatched to the scene and located the man in the area of Perran Dr. and Paula Ct. – near Erin Mills Pkwy. and Dundas St. W.

“In front of a residence on Fifth Line West, there was an exchange of gunfire between the man and four police officers,” the SIU said in a news release . “The man was struck multiple times. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
