New 'major' signing suggests Arne Slot overhaul is on the way

Liverpool are planning a 'major' signing, according to reports. It’s one that signals an overhaul.

Liverpool are looking to do things in different ways. That was the message from last summer as they spent enormously to reshape the team.

There was an important factor, though - they didn’t try to change the system. It was a squad built for Arne Slot’s 4-2-3-1, even if it’s now clear that they didn’t build that very well.

But Liverpool grabbed themselves two new full-backs, stuck with four centre-backs, made sure they had dual striker options who could play as long targets, and picked up a world-class no.10. This group was built for one system, essentially.

Only, it hasn’t worked. Be it the system or the players, things aren’t heading in the right direction and Liverpool need a re-think.

Suggestions of their next ‘major’ signing may be exactly that.

Liverpool's 'major' rethink

Football Insider reports that Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back. The outlet suggests that even after spending a fortune on Jeremy Jacquet, the Reds still aren't done in the position and will move again for a 'major' arrival.

And that's interesting. It suggests that Liverpool don't simply want another body to offer depth but a proper, senior signing. Potentially a bigger one than Jacquet.

Or at least, someone more immediately ready than the 20-year-old. But then that draws up questions about Ibrahima Konate.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and Liverpool are yet to find terms on a new one. But at the same time, it looks more likely that Konate renews, given the lack of any reports linking him elsewhere.
