Former Chelsea star praises Rosenior for being ‘true to himself’ under ‘intense pressure’

Ex-Chelsea player Tony Dorigo praised Liam Rosenior for the way he has approached his role as head coach of the Blues.

Dorigo played for Chelsea between 1987 and 1991, and was speaking with Hayters TV via soccer betting.

The ex-England player said he was surprised that the club decided to appoint Liam Rosenior as manager, but that he has done well so far: “I’ve got to say, the appointment was an interesting one. It’s a bold one right from the very start. I do think he’s one heck of a tactical manager, I remember him at Hull, watching the way they played was brilliant.

“But then going to Chelsea, it’s a different ball game completely. I think he’s handling himself well. He’s trying to be true to himself, which is always important. I always look at managers, you have to be who you are. And I think what we’re seeing, certainly from Liam, is exactly that. He’s got a big job because the pressure is intense at Chelsea, they haven’t really got time to wait a few months.

“You’ve got to start getting results straight away. He’s got some talented boys, they’ve invested a lot of money. So he needs to get it right. And I think he’s going on the right lines for sure. A positive start, but still work to do.”

Rosenior has won eight out of his first 12 games, but Chelsea have recently suffered disappointing draws against both Leeds and Burnley.

They were beating Leeds 2-0 before the game finished 2-2, and they were beating Burnley 1-0 before a sixth Premier League red card saw them concede in the 93rd minute and drop two points.

And Dorigo noted the inconsistency, saying: “In some games I look at them and I’m thinking, ‘wow’, for 45 minutes, they look like world beaters. Then the next 45, you’re wondering where that team’s gone. So I think that consistency is still not quite there yet.”

Rosenior joined the Blues from Strasbourg, a club also owned by BlueCo – Chelsea’s owners.

And Dorigo says Rosenior is embracing the modern way of football clubs being run, with sporting directors having more power.

“I played in Europe, I played for Torino in Italy,” he explained. “And the structure of the way the club was managed, it was very different to an English football club. And as the years have gone on, we’ve certainly gone towards that European model.

“And now there’s a lot of clubs that do that. The manager doesn’t control everything, the sporting director does, and you then fit the bits in after that. And I think that’s where the balance is. You’ve still got some managers that want to have more of a say in overall footballing matters, and others manage the team and the football on the pitch, and leave everything else to the sporting director.

“With Liam Rosenior, he will work to the more modern way of doing things. And I think for some owners, that works really well. Other owners, not so much. The Chelsea owners want to have a big say in things. They want to make sure that the consistency is there when they change manager.”
