Sixers coach gives thoughts on rookie VJ Edgecombe's shooting ability

· Yahoo Sports

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe has been terrific in his maiden season in the league as he's averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. For a player selected No. 3 overall joining a veteran-laden team that has its eyes on contending for a championship, those are impressive numbers.

A number that really stands out is Edgecombe's 3-point percentage of 36.4%. His shooting has been a bit up and down as of late as he continues to push through the amount of games and minutes he's had to play, but he has found his rhythm as of late as he ended Philadelphia's 3-game road trip shooting 8-for-11 from deep over the final two games.

"I don't think he really knows what percentage he's shooting or cares," Nurse told reporters. "I think he knows he's put in the work, and he's going to take the ones that are available, and whether he's had two good games in a row or two bad games in a row, he's going to probably come out and take six or seven 3s, the ones that are available, and I think that's a really great attitude to have. That's what he should do. Take rhythm shots, take bail out ones we're gonna need him at the end of the shot clock, whatever it is."

When considering Edgecombe shot 34% from deep in his lone college season at Baylor, one has to wonder if Nurse and his staff saw a legitimate shooter in the rookie. The ability was always there, but Nurse knew they would need to work with him a bit.

"I mean, obviously, mechanics were pretty good, right?" Nurse added. "I think everyone thought he needs some work and some tweaking and stuff like that, and give him credit, I think he's put in a tremendous amount of work to get better really quickly, and it should just continue to escalate from there."

The Sixers will need Edgecombe to keep firing up open 3s in an effort to help them move up the standings in the East and make a deep playoff run as well. His shooting will be a key aspect moving forward in the 2025-26 season.
