ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — These next two summers, women’s baseball in Rockford will be bigger than it has been since, well, since the Rockford Peaches were playing ball.
This summer, Rockford will host a women’s baseball World Cup Group Stage qualifier. Now we’ve learned that Rockford will also host the actual World Cup Finals in 2027.
The World Baseball Softball Confederation has awarded Rockford and the International Women’s Baseball Museum here the right to host that event. It will take place next July 19-25.
The Group Stage competition will make take place here this July. The top three teams from the Rockford Group Stage competition and the top three from another Group Stage competition will make up the six-team field for the World Cup Finals next year. Most of the games in Rockford this year and next year will be played at Rivets Stadium. Some related events will take place at Beyer Stadium, the former home of the Rockford Peaches which is being renovated.
The Rockford event will be only the second time that a Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals will have been played on U-S soil. The last one was played in 2018 in Florida.
