Rutgers Baseball Wins Opening Series Against the College of Charleston

Rutgers baseball won its season-opening series against the College of Charleston 3-1. After falling 8-3 on opening day, the Scarlet Knights rattled off three straight impressive victories to earn the overall series win.
Charleston started the first game hot, putting Rutgers in a 5-1 hole after just two innings. The Knights would get some momentum at the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Cougars’ lead to two. However, Charleston would shut Rutgers out for the rest of the game, scoring three runs in the next three innings to give themselves a five run win. The Knights’ pitchers struggled early on in this game, but RHP Jacob Peterson flashed in his Rutgers debut, causing two scoreless innings and four strikeouts coming out of the bullpen in the losing effort.

After the first game, the Rutgers bats would find their rhythm, outscoring Charleston 32-8 in the last three matchups. Games two and three were a double header on Saturday, with Rutgers winning the first game of the day 13-2, and the second 5-2. The first game of the day would be a close affair early on, with the Knights holding a 2-1 lead going into the sixth inning. However, a two run single from Chase Krewson and an RBI single from Charlie Meglio, on top of a double steal, blew the game open Rutgers as they scored 4 runs in the inning. The Knights would outscore the Cougars 11-1 in the final four innings to secure the blowout win,
In the second game of the double header, Rutgers raced out to a 5-0 lead before the end of the third inning. However, they would fail to score after that. Pitcher Dallin Harrison played a major role in the win, pitching five strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, while striking out six with no walks. Jason Masick was called in from the bullpen to finish the game for the Knights.
Rutgers beat Charleston 14-4 in 8 innings in the final game of the series on Sunday. The Knights put Charleston in a 6-0 hole after the top of the first inning off of a Trey Wells single, Tristan Salinas double, Yomar Carreras single , and a Quinten Perilli three-run homer. Rutgers would let up three runs in the bottom of the first, but tightened up to allow only one run after that while their bats continued to score in bunches. This was the first time Rutgers batters recorded 20 hits in a game since playing Monmouth in 2024, with all nine starters netting at least one hit.
Rutgers returns to action next weekend at Virginia Tech, with game one of the three-game series set for 6 p.m. Friday in Blacksburg.
